Located close to the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar, which links the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean.
The territory covers 2.53 square miles (6.5 km²) and shares a 0.75 mile (1.2 km) land border with Spain to the north. The 1,396 foot (426m) high Rock of Gibraltar divides the peninsula into two distinct coastal districts; the East Side, which contains Sandy Bay, Catalan Bay and the proposed site for Cape Vantage; and the West Side where the majority of the permanent population of 29,000 resides.
Gibraltar enjoys a beneficial tax regime and is free from capital gains tax, wealth tax, inheritance tax, estate duty and VAT.
An attractive business location thanks to favourable corporate taxation, Gibraltar is endeavouring to become an international e-commerce centre.
With its rich history and strategic role at the junction of Europe and Africa, Gibraltar benefits from a strong tourism trade with increasing visitor numbers assisted in part by enhanced air travel options in the region.
Leisure activities are popular and plentiful in and around Gibraltar.
As well as sailing, diving and fishing, Gibraltar is a 20 minute drive from some of the world’s finest golf courses in the nearby Cádiz province. Courses further north in the Costa Del Sol are within easy driving distance.
In addition, Gibraltar is also a popular stop for cruise ships and attracts many day visitors from Spain tempted in part by duty and VAT-free shopping opportunities.
With its Mediterranean climate temperatures can rise well above 30°C in summer and Gibraltar enjoys an average of 300 sunshine days a year.
Plans are approved for a new international airport terminal and border crossing.
